Episode 29: These Summer Storm by Sarah McLean

For Episode 29 we’re diving into These Summer Storms by Sarah MacLean - a deliciously messy family drama set on a private island off the Rhode Island coast, where grief, billionaires, sibling rivalries, and one absolutely unhinged inheritance game collide.
When Alice Storm returns home for her father’s funeral, she fully intends to keep her head down and leave as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, her late father has other plans, forcing the entire dysfunctional Storm family to remain on the island for a week of tasks, secrets, manipulation, emotional damage, and enough tension to power the East Coast.
Think Succession, but with more romance, more coastal atmosphere, and at least a tiny shred of emotional self-awareness. We’re talking secret affairs, simmering resentment, family power plays, inherited trauma, wildly complicated sibling dynamics, and one unfairly attractive right-hand man who absolutely does not help the situation.
Join us as we discuss the chaos, the characters we loved to hate, the razor-sharp family dynamics, and why this book felt like the perfect storm of summer escapism and emotional devastation.

In this episode of Read, Eat, Travel, Repeat, we’re talking about The Best Dog in the World: Essays on Love - a collection that completely wrecked us in the best way.

These essays are funny, tender, and quietly devastating, all centered on the kind of love that only dog people really get. We share the pieces that stuck with us, the ones that made us laugh, and the ones that hit a little too close to home. It turns into a bigger conversation about loyalty, grief, and why dogs somehow manage to leave the biggest mark on our lives.
We also take some time to share stories about our own dogs, past and present, because honestly, you can’t talk about a book like this without talking about your dogs.  If you’ve ever loved a dog (or are currently side-eyeing yours while they pretend not to understand you), this episode is for you.

Come for the book discussion, stay for the stories!
Before you dive into the episode… may we introduce our best dogs!

Episode 27: The Best Dog in the World: Essays on Love

There are books you read—and then there are books you feel. The Best Dog in the World by Alice Hoffman is firmly the latter.
This heartfelt anthology brings together fourteen remarkable voices, including Roxane Gay, Emily Henry, Jodi Picoult, and Amy Tan, to tell stories of the dogs who changed them. What unfolds is a collection that moves effortlessly between joy and grief, laughter and quiet devastation, capturing the full emotional landscape of loving a dog.
Each essay feels like sitting beside someone as they share a memory they can’t quite let go of... the muddy paws, the unexpected comfort, the way a dog becomes not just part
of your life, but part of who you are. These aren’t just stories about pets; they’re stories about connection, about being seen, and about the kind of love that asks for nothing and gives everything.
Whether you’ve recently said goodbye, are in the thick of daily walks and chewed-up shoes, or are simply someone who understands that dogs leave pawprints long after they’re gone, this book will stay with you.
It’s tender. It’s honest. And yes... keep tissues nearby.
